Privacy Policy

Know Before You Vote ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Know Before You Vote mobile application and website at knowbeforeyouvote.com (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

  • Email address (required for account creation)
  • Name (optional, for your profile)
  • Password (stored securely via our authentication provider)

Location Data

  • Home address or ZIP code that you enter manually for precinct lookup
  • Approximate device geolocation (when you grant permission) to determine your voting precinct and show locally relevant election information

Location data is used solely to identify your voting precinct and display relevant ballot information. We do not continuously track your location. Device geolocation is requested only when you use the ballot lookup feature and is not stored on our servers beyond what is necessary to complete the lookup.

Survey Responses

Your responses to candidate-matching surveys, used to generate personalized candidate match results.

Device and Usage Information

  • Device type, operating system, and browser type
  • Crash logs and error reports (collected automatically via Sentry)
  • Pages visited and interactions within the app (basic usage analytics)

Cookies and Local Storage

We use local storage to maintain your authentication session. We do not use cookies for advertising or tracking purposes.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Service
  • Look up your voting precinct and display relevant ballot information
  • Generate candidate match results based on your survey responses
  • Authenticate your account and maintain your session
  • Diagnose technical issues and fix bugs
  • Analyze usage patterns to improve the user experience
  • Respond to your inquiries and support requests

We do not:

  • Sell your personal information to third parties
  • Use your data for advertising purposes
  • Share your data with political campaigns or parties
  • Build advertising profiles based on your activity

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate the Service. These providers may receive limited data as described below:

Supabase (Authentication & Database)

Supabase hosts our user accounts and database. Your email, name, and account data are stored on Supabase infrastructure. See Supabase Privacy Policy.

Sentry (Error Tracking)

Sentry receives crash logs, error reports, and basic device information to help us diagnose and fix bugs. Sentry does not receive your name, email, or survey responses. See Sentry Privacy Policy.

Vercel (Hosting & Analytics)

Vercel hosts our application and may collect basic analytics data such as page views and performance metrics. See Vercel Privacy Policy.

Google Translate

If you use the translation feature, Google Translate may load external scripts and process page content. See Google Privacy Policy.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may share data only in the following circumstances:

  • With the third-party service providers listed above, solely to operate the Service
  • If required by law, regulation, or legal process
  • To protect the rights, safety, or property of our users or the public

5. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. Survey responses are retained to provide ongoing candidate matching results. Crash logs and error reports are retained by Sentry according to their retention policies (typically 90 days). You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time (see Section 6).

6. Data Deletion & Your Rights

You may request deletion of your account and all associated personal data at any time by contacting us at contact@knowbeforeyouvote.com. We will process deletion requests within 30 days.

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Withdraw consent for location data collection at any time via your device settings

7. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, request deletion of your personal information, and opt out of the sale of personal information. 8. European Privacy Rights (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, you have additional rights including the right to access, rectify, port, and erase your data, and the right to restrict or object to processing. Our legal basis for processing is your consent (for location data) and legitimate interest (for providing the Service). To exercise these rights, contact us at contact@knowbeforeyouvote.com.

9. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete that information. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us at contact@knowbeforeyouvote.com.

10. Tracking & App Tracking Transparency

We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites. We do not participate in ad networks or share data for advertising purposes. We do not use Apple's IDFA or Google's Advertising ID. If prompted by iOS App Tracking Transparency, you may decline, it will not affect your use of the Service.

11. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information. All data is transmitted over HTTPS (encrypted in transit) and stored in encrypted databases (encrypted at rest) via Supabase. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy within the app and updating the effective date below. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

14. App Store Data Safety Disclosures

Apple App Privacy

As disclosed in the App Store, we collect: Contact Info (email, name), Location (approximate), Identifiers (user ID), Diagnostics (crash data), and Usage Data (product interaction). No data is used for tracking.

Google Play Data Safety

As disclosed on Google Play, we collect: email address, name, address, approximate location, app interactions, and crash logs. No data is shared with third parties for advertising. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. You may request data deletion.
